Software engineer. Made Workflow, which became Shortcuts. Links, notes, photographs, and films worth passing along.
What a printer taught me about LAN mode
Bambu’s local mode is real, but it took a packet capture and a weekend to trust it.
The case for boring mail servers↗
Reasonable people disagree about running your own mail. This is the best version of the argument I’ve read for doing it anyway:
The interesting parts of a mail server are solved. What’s left is the boring part — keys that rotate, backups that restore, a dashboard someone actually looks at — and the boring part is the whole job. If you don’t want the boring part, you don’t want a mail server; you want an inbox. That’s fine. But be honest about which one you’re paying for.
I’d add: pick the software with the fewest moving parts you don’t understand. For me that turned out to be Stalwart.

Fog line, Ocean Beach. Running Authentik for one person is too much software, and I’d do it again.
Blue hour from the 4:10 to Sacramento. 0:06. A tiny ATProto PDS on a NUC↗
Your handle is a DNS record and your identity is a DID. Once that clicks, the PDS is just a box that holds your repo, and it can be any box.
Exactly the write-up I wanted before I did mine. The migration section is the part nobody else documents.
Every clock in the house is now the same clock. Two NTP servers, one PPS-disciplined, and a rule that nothing gets to set its own time. It’s absurd and I’m very happy.
